The Paper

I’d just like to say four things before this paper gets underway. First, congratulations to all of the fifth graders for their efforts that came to a climax on Sunday, November 22. I wish them all well. Second, a few of the articles use present or future tense for something that’s already happened. That’s because the articles were written before the event happened. Finally, I may insert something from here to there. If you see a stray comment followed by this "–AY", that means that I stuck something in there. Also, if you are not in the eighth grade but would like to write an article, contact me. We are in need of sports writers!!! Enjoy the November 1998 edition of The Paper! –AY

The School Informer

By Robert Hayes

This is a new installment to The Paper. Its purpose is to inform students of the school news that they’re most interested in while informing you on what you should know for the upcoming weeks.

The choir is performing four concerts this year, three Christmas concerts and one Spring concert. Festival of Carols featuring the Christmas Cantata will be the title for the Christmas Concerts this year. The first concert is on Sunday, December 13th at 3:30 p.m., which means we have to report to school at 2:15 p.m. That gives you about 2 hours to grab a bite for lunch in between Sunday Mass and the concert. The day after the first concert, Monday, December 14, there will be no school! The second concert is on Friday, December 18th at 8:00 p.m., which means you have to report to school at 7:00 p.m. The third and final Christmas Concert is on Sunday, December 20th at 3:30 p.m., which gives you about 2 hours to grab a bite for lunch between Sunday Mass and the concert. The day after the concert, Monday, December 21, there will be no school! Both bell choirs will play at the concerts as well. All the concerts only last approximate-ly 90 minutes. But of course, this year’s 2 hour long Wednesday night rehearsal with orchestra will take place on December 9th.

The 7th and 8th grade dance has been scheduled for Friday night, January 15th from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. It will be in Digiovanni Hall like the previous dances. The disc jockey that has done the last two dances will be hosting the dance. The cost is only $6.00 a student, and the girls don’t have to pay. Refreshments will be served too. Drew Vanderburg will handle problems or requests for music, so please contact him. And if you don’t contact him, he’ll contact you. (Probably by e-mail.) If you have any questions, ask me.

The Boston Archdiocesan Choir School’s Winter Instrumental Adjudication is rapidly approaching. Vermeer’s Band will be performing the theme song from the Addams Family. If any 6th, 7th, or 8th graders are interested in joining, ask Ms. Vermeer. Once again, both bell choirs are also performing.

From the way things are looking, our next pizza day will be at the annual Christmas Party on Thursday, December 17th during school. December T-Pass money will probably be due before Wednesday, November 25th. Don’t forget to keep (or start) passing in Hershey candy wrappers and Box Tops for Education to the office. I guess that’s a wrap! If you have any questions about school related issues, contact me.

School News

By Matt Rusteika

Well, this time I decided to do school news. What a mess I got myself into. I guess I can try, but don’t be surprised if the paper combusts all over your new tie.

Report Cards. I will have to ask a few of you not to throw up at the mention of this horrible, terrible, atrocious thing that comes along three times a year. I understand that many people, including myself, did not do as well as we hoped to do on our report cards. However, I don’t know many people who are doing much better than you, the reader, so at least you’re not alone when your dad or mom whips out the ol’ beatin’ rod, that, I’m sure, does not need to be broken in any more!

Next on my list: Christmas. Well, the concerts are at hand, the red folders are out, and we’re singing the same old stuff again. However, most of us are not used to singing the part where we are now; switching from soprano to alto, alto to bass, soprano to bass, or the three in-betweeny sopraltoes who switched to bass and the one to alto. That gives a whole new challenge to those old, boring songs, especially for those bad singers among us, namely, the changed voices. The concerts are on the 13th, 18th, and 20th of December this year, and just in case you didn’t know, Christmas Eve is the 24th and Christmas is the 25th. Both bellchoirs are playing at the concerts and on Christmas Eve, too, which is a new thing.

Well, that concludes my school news article for this paper. I hope I did okay.

Volleyball at Recess

By Andrew Yaksic

What’s your choice at 11:55? It used to be basketball. It was all the rage, and the court was packed. Those were the days when Colin Maxey and Rob Fox dribbled up and down the court, swishing shots, and becoming the two-man show. Now they’re gone, and now the heat is picking up in volleyball. In the last four weeks or so, the matchup has been 7 vs. 8, and usually the 8th grade is outnumbered. However, we must have the better team. We have won every game we’ve played, with 2 shutouts (a new unbreakable school record) and 5 games with a final of 21-1. I’d like to take the opportunity to present the Most Valuable Player award for the 8th grade to Reese Williams. He’s a good server and a great all-around player. He’s also the one that started counting scores, and letting us know how badly we were torching the other team. In a recent "interview" with Ms. Miller, she said that she wouldn’t give up on the 7th grade. She won’t let up on her optimism. However, the 8th grade sees it differently. We are supremely confident that we can win every game, even with bogus calls favoring the 7th graders. I applaud the 7th graders for giving us a good fight, with the score twice ending at 21-13, and actually leading us 11-10 at one point. I’d also like to applaud the fact that they haven’t given up hope, and I suppose that one day they will beat us. On Opposite Day.

Let’s establish something, my friends. Doug Flutie is the man! He has led the Buffalo Bills to second place in the AFC East. Even if he is only 5’10", the man has instincts and a cannon for an arm. I think, right now, that he combines the total package better than anyone else in the game does. The quarterback and leader of the team, he has taken the rest of football by storm. When he first started a game, the Bills were 1-3. Now they are 6-4, having beaten such tough opponents as the Jacksonville Jaguars and our own Patriots. I have to admit that I was happy even when the Pats lost last week – only because it was to Doug Flutie and his Bills. Look for the Bills to go deep in the playoffs. (Just a little early football prediction for the playoffs, as it’s already halfway through the season.) Go Bills!

To switch conferences, the Atlanta Falcons have come out of nowhere this year to lead the NFC West, even over the notorious 49ers. They defeated the Niners this past week to take the lead in the division. The week before they crushed our beloved Pats by about 4 touchdowns – at Foxboro. The Pats, who are out of contention, I think it’s safe to say, have a big game against Miami this Monday night. Going back to the Peach State, however, look for the Falcons to win the conference and to go deep into the playoffs.

Now, to the baseball free agent market. It has been a wild ride so far for the Red Sox – especially for the Red Sox. Mo Vaughn has officially ended his tenure with his "beloved" Red Sox. The Anaheim Angels have offered him "mo" money, so that’s where he’ll probably end up playing. However, the Red Sox are making news of their own. They have signed Jose Offerman, an infielder whom we acquired from the from the Kansas City Royals. Offerman, known for his arguments with management in his first couple of years, has calmed down enough to bat .310 and steal 45 bases last season. He should bat leadoff for the Bosox next year, although manager Jimy Williams isn’t sure where he’ll play. There have also been many rumors surrounding the Sox. I heard about signing Kevin Brown (pitcher, Padres), Randy Johnson (pitcher, Astros), and even Bernie Williams (center fielder, Yankees). One rumor that seems true is that Dan Duquette, general manager, is pursuing Albert Belle (left fielder, White Sox). Belle, known just as much for his antics off the field as his All-Star talents on it, reportedly wants to be the highest-paid player in baseball. The Yankees, having baseball’s deepest pockets, are also courting him, of course (while trying to keep Bernie Williams at the same time). I don’t know if the Red Sox can afford to make him the highest-paid player in baseball, but I don know that the Red Sox could sure use him in left field. Belle is a pretty good fielder with a decent arm, but he is best known for his outstanding hitting. I can just imagine Belle hitting homer after homer after homer into the screen in left field over the Green Monster. I can also imagine Yankees fans (e.g. Mr. C.) weeping when the Red Sox win the AL East in a year or two, which will happen if (a) the Yankees lose Bernie Williams, (b) the Red Sox sign Albert Belle, continuing the great tradition of Red Sox power-hitting left fielders which began with Ted Williams and continued with Carl Yastremski and Jim Rice, and (c) the Red Sox pick up a solid starting pitcher like Randy Johnson or Kevin Brown, or even Roger Clemens (another rumor I heard).

Video Games

By Reese Williams

This issue in VIDEO GAMES, we have Monster reviews on new games MediEvil and WCW vs. NWO Revenge, plus we also have a more detailed preview than last time on Zelda 64, Ocarina of Time. But before we get into that, we have the entire story behind Zelda 64, from the Zelda 64 website.

THE LEGEND BEGINS….

The creation myth of Hyrule has been passed down through the ages by the wise sages of the land. It tells of the time before time, or at least before beings existed that could reckon time, or care about its passage. The land of Hyrule was born when the three creator goddesses, Din, Nayru and Farore, descended from the heavens and brought order to a swirling mass of cosmic dust. They populated their new creation with five different humanoid races. They spawned the fish-like Zora in the watery regions of the world. In the rocky mountains, the rock-eating Gorons flourished. In the depths of the forest, the elfin Kokiri sprung up, along with their guardian, the Deku Tree, who sheltered them from outside forces. The swarthy Gerudo inhabited Hyrule's deserts, and in the verdant plains, the noble Hylians held sway.

Before leaving their new world, the three goddesses imparted on the newborn races sacred codes of law and order. When they departed Hyrule for the heavens, they left behind a symbol of their power, the legendary Triforce. Representing the three aspects of the goddesses, Power, Courage and Wisdom, the Triforce became the basis for Hyrule's providence, and it was revered by all the different races of the land. Affected by the Triforce's magic, the land near its resting place became prosperous and beautiful. This legendary, otherworldly realm was known by many names, including the Sacred Realm and later, the Golden Land.

Although most of the inhabitants of Hyrule respected the Triforce, there were those audacious enough to plot to steal the relic and use its power for their own selfish ends. To protect the Triforce from falling into the wrong hands, a great Sage named Rauru planned and built the Temple of Light to guard the entrance to the Sacred Realm. Within the temple, the entry way to the Sacred Realm was barred by a complex magical seal that could only be opened by one worthy of audience with the Triforce; one who had all aspects of the Triforce in perfect balance.

As time passed, the Triforce became a legend, and the different people of Hyrule forgot the laws and wisdom that the goddesses had left behind. Warfare and strife became common in Hyrule, as the armies of the Zora marched on the Hylians. The Gorons fought the Gerudo. It seemed every race of Hyrule was at the other's throat. Only the secluded Kokiri, sheltered by their magical forest and the Great Deku Tree, were spared the destruction of Hyrule's civil wars.

After 50 years of ceaseless combat, there arose a Hylian King of great wisdom, courage, and power. Through his brilliant military campaigns and wise diplomacy, he was able to bring the varied people of Hyrule into a tenuous harmony. Treaties of peace were signed, and prosperity once again seemed to bloom in Hyrule. But no sooner had people declared peace in Hyrule than trouble once again stalked the land.

In the trackless desert of Hyrule, the King of the Gerudo Thieves, Ganondorf, had come across the old legends of the Triforce during his magical research. The tales told of the great power that would come to the one who possessed the sacred relic:

In a Realm beyond sight,

The sky shines gold not blue,

There, the Triforce's might

Makes mortal dreams come true.

Another little known legend was especially intriguing to the scheming Gerudo. It provided the details on how to gain entry to the Sacred Realm. According to the story, there were three Spiritual Stones that were part of the puzzle that unlocked the Sacred Realm. He read with great interest that the Spiritual Stones were held by the Kokiri, the Gorons, and the Zora. But although these were essential for opening the gate to the Sacred Realm, one item above all was necessary, and that was the legendary Ocarina of Time. According to this legend, that magical instrument was passed down by the Royal Family of Hyrule. Armed with this treasure map, Ganondorf set his plans into motion.

With his evil minions, he rode forth from the desert, intent on using his own mystical powers and force of arms to steal the Spiritual Stones from their owners. He believed it would be easy to bully the Gorons and Zora into handing over the stones, weakened as they were by Hyrule's civil wars. He thought he could easily destroy the Kokiri's guardian tree and claim their stone.

With the stones finally in hand, he would then use trickery to obtain the final key to the Sacred Realm. His coming audience with the King of Hyrule would be the perfect opportunity to infiltrate the mighty Hyrule Castle. Once inside, he would find out which member of the Royal Family had the ocarina. He vowed that he would do anything to get the ocarina, slay its holder if necessary, even if the holder was the King of Hyrule's young daughter, the princess Zelda...

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA 64 PREVIEWS:

A dark time is approaching in the fantasy realm of Hyrule. The storm clouds of evil are gathering over the land, and malevolent forces are ready to strike at the most sacred and powerful artifact in the land, the mysterious Triforce. The only thing standing between chaos and destruction are two youths, an elfin boy from the magical Kokiri Forest, and the young princess, Zelda. Do you have what it takes to guide the Kokiri hero, Link, from his forest home to the final confrontation with the ultimate evil force?

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the newest of Nintendo's games in the Legend of Zelda series. Exclusively for the Nintendo 64 video game system, this new chapter in the series reveals the creation of the fantasy land of Hyrule, the origin of the Triforce, and tells the tale of the first adventures of the heroic adventurer Link and the Princess Zelda. Like the previous games in the series, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is sure to take its place in the realm of video game legends, with outstanding graphics, a sweeping storyline, an amazing adventure, mind-bending puzzles, and a little bit of humor.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time takes place in the fantasy world of Hyrule with vibrant, real-time 3-D graphics. With full freedom of movement, your quest will take you through dense forests and across wind-whipped deserts. You'll swim raging rivers. Climb gigantic mountains. Dash on horseback across rolling hills. And when you reach your destination, you'll find yourself in dungeons full of creatures that will fight to put an end to your adventures, and your life.

As you travel through the many locations of Hyrule, a story will unfold. An evil being of immense power covets the sacred relic that will give him ultimate might, the Triforce. You must race against time to find the keys to the legendary Sacred Realm where the Triforce is kept. Fail, and the fair land of Hyrule and all its peoples will fall into a dark age of destruction. Your adventure will even span time itself as the hero must venture back and forth between two ages to completely foil the evil plot that threatens his world. It is a quest so epic, it will take many hours of adventure to complete.

But while there are legions of monsters to be slain, the forces of evil cannot be thwarted with force of arms alone. A true hero must possess wisdom in addition to courage. Within the depths of a dozen dungeons, puzzles as perplexing as they are deadly must be solved to win weapons and tools necessary to completing your quest.

You will not be totally alone in your fight. Throughout your travels, you will encounter people who thirst for justice and will help and travel with you. Speak to everyone you see. You never can tell who might posses a pearl of wisdom that will be the key to unlocking a great mystery.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is Nintendo's most challenging RPG yet. With 265 Megabits of action, this is one game that you won't finish overnight. You can save up to three adventures in progress right on the cartridge. Add a Rumble Pak accessory to feel the full realism of force feedback (and help you find even more hidden items). The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time will be available in stores everywhere on November 23rd, for a price of about $69.95. On the VIDEO GAMES scale from 1 to 10, I rate Zelda 64 a 9.8, the highest ever rated in this column.

MediEvil:

For years, Daniel Fortesque had amazed the nobles of Gallowmere with wild tales of slain dragons and vanquished legions. The King was so impressed that he made Daniel a knight and appointed him head of the Royal Battalion. Of course, it was only an honorary post - Gallowmere had not seen a war in many centuries - but the King liked stories, and Dan was an excellent storyteller.

But then evil Zarok the mad magician returned from years in exile. Embittered and filled with wrath, he threatened to unleash an army of zombies that he had built using the darkest of magic. The King was in desperate need of a hero and knew exactly whom he wanted.

Sir Dan was thrust at the front of the King's army to face a monstrous enemy. The battle commenced and within seconds Sir Dan fell to the ground, struck in the eye with the very first arrow fired. His wound was fatal and the army was left to fight on without him.

Zarok's legions were defeated, but Zarok himself was never found. Embarrassed by Sir Dan's poor show, and realizing his subjects needed to feel safe, King Peregrin declared that Sir Daniel Fortesque had died in mortal combat, seconds after killing the sinister wizard. A hero's tomb was erected to Sir Dan, the history books inscribed with tales of his valor.

Zarok was soon forgotten, a lost character in history's plays. But Zarok himself never forgot, he lay in hiding, creating a bigger, stronger army of mutated monsters.

100 years later, his scheming complete, Zarok returned. He unleashed his evil magic and catapulted the world into eternal darkness, turning villagers into crazed madmen, and awaking the dead. Accidentally revived by Zarok's wicked spell, Sir Dan has also returned from the grave with a chance to finally earn the hero status he was given so many years ago. And so the story unfolds...

MediEvil is an excellent game with high-tech graphics, good music, and great gameplay. Playing the role of Dan Fortesque back from the dead, you work your way through many levels beginning in the graveyard. You must collect Runes, find treasure, acquire weapons, gain knowledge, buy potions, fight monsters, and destroy incredibly tough bosses like: The Dragon Guardian, Bloodmonath Skull Cleaver, The Pumpkin Witch, and even Zarok, the sorcerer, himself! This action-packed game will prove to be a challenge to even the most experienced video game players. I rate it an 8.9.

WCW vs. NWO Revenge:

This game has only been out for a week, and it is already a big hit! WCW vs. NWO Revenge, which is the sequel to WCW vs. NWO World Tour, has already become the favorite Nintendo 64 wrestling game besides WWF Warzone. Revenge excels above World Tour in many different areas. Some of the new features in Revenge are:

-80 Wrestlers--Including 40 WCW/NWO Superstars

-Championship Mode--Participating in Pay-Per-View such as Bash at the Beach, Souled Out, Starcade, Halloween Havoc, and so on. Includes WCW belts.

-Edit a Wrestler--Change your favorite wrestler to the NWO or back to WCW.

-Win/Loss/Tie Tracking--See if you can match Goldberg’s record

-Tons of Weapons--Briefcases, Trash cans, Chains, Pipes, Chairs, Tables, Bats, Etc. You can also bring these into the ring.

-Tons of Hidden Wrestlers--Making The Roster Even Deeper

-40-Man Battle Royal

Here is the official wrestler list for WCW vs. NWO Revenge: (some of these are hidden characters that you have to unlock)

Hollywood Hogan; Stevie Ray; Kidman; Kanyon; Bret Hart; Giant; Bryan Adams; Scott Hall; Scott Norton; Eric Bischoff; Kevin Nash; Sting; Lex Luger; Buff Bagwell; Macho Man Randy Savage; Konnan; Raven; Saturn; Lodi; Riggs; Sick Boy; Reese; Roddy Piper; Diamond Dallas Page; Goldberg; Chris Benoit; Rick Steiner; Fit Finley; Disco Inferno; Jim Neidhart; British Bulldog; Glacier; Meng; Van Hammer; Yugi Nagata; Larry Zbysko; Barbarian; Wrath; La parka; Chris Jericho; Eddie Guerrero; Psychosis; Rey Mysterio Jr.; Dean Malenko; Juventud Guerrera; Ultimo Dragon; Chavo Guerrero Jr.; Alex Wright; Aki Man; Shogun; Executioner; Dr. Frank; Jekel Maya; Inca Boy; Hawk Hana; Kim Chee; Dake Ken; Brickowski; Ming Chee; Han Zo Mon; Scott Steiner; Curt Hennig; Booker T

In my opinion, WCW vs. NWO Revenge surpasses, by far, the preceding in the series WCW vs. NWO World Tour, but it just falls short of the high standards of WWF Warzone. I rate this game a 9.2, and I recommend it as a great game for the beginner and intermediate skill level wrestling video game players. For more advanced players, I recommend WWF Warzone, because the moves are more complicated. Overall, WCW vs. NWO World Tour is a definite Must Get for WCW fans, wrestling fans, and sports game fans everywhere.

DreamWorks vs. Disney

In the past, Disney has been the leading choice and maker of children’s movies. Now, along comes DreamWorks, and the battle begins. DreamWorks’ first film was The Peacemaker (George Clooney, Nicole Kidman), that was aimed at the upper age group. The next film was Small Soldiers, about toys that were activated with a military computer chip. Although it was aimed at 5 to 14-year-olds, it got a PG-13 rating. Thought Disney wouldn’t make such a film, they started work on A Bug’s Life (Nov. 25), which was made in conjunction with Pixar. This duo brought us the delightful film Toy Story, which brought a whole line of merchandise to Disney’s already vast and wealthy empire. However, the whole bit of riding on the top easily was threatened by DreamWorks’ Antz, which was very successful. So, when A Bug’s Life opens we’ll see how the competitors compete. Disney, you’re not alone.

*** ATTENTION READERS! ***

There is a contest from the movie section. If you can name the five movies these lines are from , you win a prize.

1. "You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth!"

2. "Let me spell it out for you. I want you to blow up Madison Square Garden!"

3. "Redrum."

4. "‘Ohhh ahhh,’ that’s how it always starts. Then there’s running and screaming."

5. "We have to fight fire with marshmallows. Prepare the toys!"

Magic: The Gathering Omnipedia

By Drew Vanderburg

This installment will hopefully be in every issue from now on, bringing you the latest info on the Magic: The Gathering world. I know the fad is over, but there are still about a dozen people in the school who still play, so I thought I’d keep these articles cranking.

Due to the summer vacation and a small problem with my word processor, I have neglected to tell you about the last three Magic expansions until now. Last June, "The Rath Cycle" smashed to a close with "Exodus," the third and final expansion taking place in Rath. In case you’re following the storyline, the Weatherlight did rescue Sisay and escape from Rath in the nick of time, leaving the citizens in revolt against Volrath. Ertai, Lyna, and Urza (yes, the planes-walker back from the old days) are left behind stranded in Rath. Another interesting twist was when we learned that Volrath was Gerrard’s brother!

The next release by Wizards of the Coast was not really an expansion. It is a supplement. The "Unglued" supplement is the most creative set to date. It consists of everything from double-sized cards to 99/99’s to chickens to rabid sheep to the hokey pokey! It was created when a complaint arose that Magic was becoming too competitive. This crazy set was designed to put the fun back into Magic, and it did. Sadly, Unglued is not allowed in tournament play.

Before I move on to the major expansion on 1998, let me just mention that sometime last spring another set came out. For all you "Portal" fans, allow me to announce the release of "Portal: Second Age." I don’t know a lot about it because I do not buy "Portal" sets, but I know that it is also not legal in tournaments. Finally, the set I’ve really been anxious to get a hold on, "Urza’s Saga"! It is awesome! Along with 350 spankin’ new cards, it introduces several new card mechanics. First, there’s cycling. If you draw a card with Cycling and don’t want it, you may pay a cost (for example, Cycling 2) and discard it and draw another card instead. This ability is extremely useful because you get to pick which card you want, the one with cycling or a mystery card if the cycling one is useless. The second new trick is Echo. Creatures with echo are always really fast or really strong, but always really good. However, echo makes you have to pay their casting cost again the next turn after you play them, or else they die. You might want to let them die next turn if they are unaffected by summoning sickness like Goblin War Buggy, because you get to use them once before you have to pay the casting again. Finally, "Urza’s Saga" has all kinds of cool stuff with its enchantments. Enchantments that become creatures when certain things happen, or that go back to your hand when they die, or grow more and more counters until you sacrifice them to do something big are all really cool. "Urza’s Saga" also has the long awaited card, Karn, Silver Golem.

All of these new sets are really cool, and if you still play, you should check them out. Christmas is coming. There are also preconstructed decks, 4 each, for both "Exodus" and "Urza’s Saga." The symbol for "Exodus" is a bridge; for "Unglued," a cracked chicken’s egg; for "Portal: Second Age," I don’t know nor care; and for "Urza’s Saga," appropriately, two gears.

The next thing to keep your eyes peeled for – "Urza’s Legacy."

If you’ve noticed, there’s quite a bit of blank space at the end. For now I’ve put in a picture of a Magic card and a screenshot from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. If you have a one- or two-frame comic or maybe even an advertisement, then give it to me (in person, please), and I’ll do my best to get it in the next edition of The Paper. Thanks for reading! –AY

And now, the part of The Paper that everybody turns to first, two full pages of comics by Drew Vanderburg and Mike DeFillippi!
