The Paper
Well, I guess we have something to report. Obviously, there has been a temporary name change in the newspaper. While it has formerly been called What’s Up and The BACS Inchoirer, the editors have come to the conclusion that a name change is in order, and by the next issue, there will be a permanent name for this newspaper. As for the newspaper itself, we have also taken a step back to more of a What’s Up format, for just this one issue, while we get used to the new format. We would like to say hello to the new class of fifth graders, as this is the first chance the newspaper has had to do that formally. So, let’s get started!

David McCullough’s Visit
By Ms. Yeoman
It was a joyful day indeed when David McCullough, world famous writer and historian, visited BACS. In the History/Literature class, the boys had studied his work on Johnstown Flood and Brooklyn Bridge. They were also familiar with his work on President Harry S. Truman.
With Mr. McCullough, there arrived his wife, Rosalee, his daughter, her husband, and his mother as well as his son who just came from Hawaii.
The rehearsal room was filled with enthusiasm and excitement as the lecture began. It was very apparent that David McCullough was a remarkable speaker who can hold an audience. He related stories of his own boyhood in Pennsylvania and in college. History began to come alive and to breathe with vitality through his words.
He is a "correspondent for the past." His insight and unique viewpoints give such a vivid account of the past that it feels as if you went on a trip with him.
During the summer Mr. McCullough wrote and told us that coming to BACS was the high spot of his year!
David McCullough needs no introduction; however, it would be inappropriate not to mention that he is a Pulitzer Prize winner for his book Truman. The Ken Burns’ series on the Civil War won him an Emmy. You may also recognize him from his narration on the American Experience.

NFL 1998/1999 Season
By Robert Hayes
Last season, the Denver Broncos became the first American Football Conference (AFC) team to win the Super Bowl since 1984; the Green Bay Packers were undefeated on their home turf at Lambeau Field in Wisconsin; Brett Favre won another MVP award as the star quarterback for the Packers; John Elway won his first Super Bowl ring ever; Jerry Rice tore two ligaments in his left knee, and then on his returning game broke his left kneecap while catching a touchdown pass; and Dan Marino finished his 15th NFL season without ever winning a Super Bowl. So what is in store for the fans this season?
National Football Conference The NFC is, without a doubt, the more talented out of both conferences. With the 1997 Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, the 1995-96 champs the San Francisco 49ers, and the 1992-94 Super Bowl winners, the Dallas Cowboys, the NFC has always been the dominant force. Add into the equation the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Detroit Lions, the Carolina Panthers, and the improved Washington Redskins, and it spells excitement. Don’t forget the New York Giants, Mike Ditka’s New Orleans Saints, and the Minnesota Vikings and that brings even more excitement to the conference. I am predicting the San Francisco 49ers, with healthy Jerry Rice, to win this year’s Super Bowl, which will be held in Miami, Florida at ProPlayer Stadium.
American Football Conference Never count the AFC out when it comes to the playoffs. No one thought that the Broncos would even make it to the playoffs last year, rather than win the Super Bowl! The AFC consists of teams like the New England Patriots, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Denver Broncos, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Other noteworthy teams would have to be the New York Jets, the Miami Dolphins, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Buffalo Bills. Look for the Pittsburgh Steelers to be the opposing team against the 49ers in this season’s Super Bowl XXXIII.
New England Patriots The New England Patriots looked very impressive in their first three games of the season. Despite losing their first game to the defending Super Bowl champions, the Broncos, in Denver on Monday night, they put up a reasonably good fight. Week 2 they had to play rookie sensation Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts, which they totally destroyed without any show of mercy. Week 3 they played the Tennessee Oilers, who where just another victim for Drew Bledsoe and the New England Patriots. However, the Patriots will have a tough time getting into the playoffs this season because of their schedule. After last week’s bye, they must come back this week and face the undefeated New Orleans Saints in New Orleans. Then they must play the very difficult Kansas City Chiefs, who almost won last year’s AFC championship. (I predict the Pats will win that one 40-10.) Then long time rivals the New York Jets on Monday night and another rival the undefeated Miami Dolphins in Miami. Then the Patriots play another road game against the Indianapolis Colts. The Patriots then play the Atlanta Falcons in New England, which is probably their only sure win of the season. Then the Pats play Doug Flutie and the Bills in Buffalo. Then they play the Miami Dolphins starring Dan Marino in his 16th season on Monday night, and then the Bills are back. Then the boys in blue have to play the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh and then the St. Louis Rams in St. Louis. And finally, they play the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Jets. Not exactly an easy schedule! Look for the Patriots to make the wild card spot and the Dolphins to win the division. This is probably the season where the Dolphins get revenge on the Patriots for eliminating them twice from the playoffs in the last two years!
Inchoirer Sports Trivia Contest If you can answer this issue’s sports trivia question, you are entered to win a free slice of pizza at Tommy’s House of Pizza and are also entered to win the grand prize at the end of the year. This issue’s question is "Who was the oldest starting quarterback in the NFL last season?" Teachers, students, and members of the newspaper are all welcome to guess. Just write your name and answer on a piece of paper and give them to me at the end of the day in homeroom. You can only guess once, and all answers must be in before Halloween. Remember, your schoolwork is much more important, so don’t blow this way out of proportion. If you have any comments, questions, or suggestions just tell Kevin, Andy, or I. Check out Paul Riley’s article on the MLB playoffs and Sean McCluskey’s on the home run race, if you haven’t already done so. Keep reading the Sports Section and the Inchoirer for more contests, news, and laughter.
The MLB Playoffs
By Paul Riley
This year in baseball has probably been the most exciting season ever. Just look at some of the things that have happened. The home run chase, and the Yankees won 114 games, the second most in baseball history. Kerry Wood struck out 20 batters in one game to tie the record. However, I’m going to talk about something that is still going on now, the pennant races. Who ever thought that the Red Sox were going to get in the playoffs. Most people didn’t. The Red Sox’s record of 92-70 most likely should have got them the AL East title, but there was a team in their division with 114 wins called the Yankees. So the next hope was the Wild Card. The Red Sox were in control of that most of the season, but down the stretch almost blew it. They were able to hang on and secure a spot in the Divisional Playoffs. The question after that was whom they were going to play, the Indians or the Rangers. The Indians had to play the Twins in the last series of the season, so that was no problem for them. So it was all set in the AL. The Indians vs. the Red Sox, and the Yankees vs. the Rangers. However, what about the National League? Of course the Braves, Astros, and Padres were going to get in, easily winning their division, but what about the Wild Card. With one week left in the season, the Cubs were leading the Mets by one game, and the Giants by 4. The Mets had a horrible finish. The Cubs stayed steady, while the Giants came from nowhere and tied the Cubs on the second to last day of the season. The Mets were one game out with one game to play, and they lost their last game, so they were gone. Then it was down to the Giants and Cubs. The Cubs lost their game in 11 innings, while the Giants blew a 7-0 lead, and lost to the Rockies. So the Cubs and Giants would have to play a one game playoff to see who would get in the opening round and play the Braves. The Cubs won the game 5-3 and were ready to play the Braves, while the Giants season had come to an end in a blink of an eye. The playoffs were now set in the NL as well. The Padres and the Astros, and the Braves and the Cubs. What a great finish to an unbelievable season.
The Home Run Race
By Seán McCluskey
This has been an extremely exciting year in baseball history. Possibly, the most exciting part has been the home run race between Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals and Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs. They had been knotted up since June, when Sammy Sosa made a surprising comeback and hit 20 homers in that single month, a Major League record. It kept on going through July and August. Sammy tied Mark sometimes, but he never surpassed his home run total. 40, 50 home runs were gone through quickly. During this time it appeared that Ken Griffey, Jr. of the Seattle Mariners and Greg Vaughn of the San Diego Padres had entered into the race, but they never came close enough to become serious candidates. Finally, McGwire broke Roger Maris’s record of 61 homers in one season. Big Mac eventually finished with 70 homers and Sosa with 66. But Slammin’ Sammy is a lock for the NL MVP because his Cubbies are in the playoffs and the Cardinals are not. This writer likes McGwire the best, but opinions differ. They are both two spectacular players in a spectacular baseball season.

WWF Warzone: This has got to be the greatest wrestling game ever created! From the realistic graphics, to the hundreds of WWF professional wrestling moves, to the recorded taunts, grunts, and groans of the actual WWF superstars themselves! This is one of the most action-packed games ever to come out on Nintendo64 and Sony Playstation. This game requires more skill and practice than WCW vs. NWo, but once you have the moves down, there are so many things you can do! On 1 Player, you can challenge the rest of the WWF in a quest for the Intercontinental Championship Belt, or even better, the World Wrestling Federation Championship Belt. Or you can just work on your moves with a 1 on 1 fight against the computer. Or For 2 player action, you can choose from 3 different modes of tag team matches, a steel cage match, a brutal weapons match or the famous Royal Rumble! With 3 or 4 players, There is a special 3 or 4 corners War mode and the biggest challenge of them all is the 1 player gauntlet match. With your choice of wrestler, you will have to face 6 other wrestlers, one after another until you defeat them all one by one by pin, submission, or count out, or one of them defeats you. There is also a training mode that helps you practice your moves before you get in the ring, and a create player mode that lets you create a wrestler with hundreds of choices from what shape face to what size and color shorts. The reason they made this special mode is because they couldn’t get permission from a lot of famous wrestlers like Vader, Marc Mero, and X Pac. So what they did was put certain body parts from those wrestlers and hundreds of others into the create a wrestler mode and let you put them together. You can even build tons of wrestlers from the past like Andre the Giant and The Brooklyn Brawler. Or lots of wrestlers from different leagues like Glacier, Hulk Hogan, Bam Bam Bigelow, or Goldberg. You have to figure out how to put these guys together, or find out from some cheat code web site or magazine. That’s why in the CODES OF THE ISSUE section of this column, I put how to create a few of these characters. You have to have a memory card in the back of your controller to save these characters if you want to use them after you shut off the game, because the next time you turn on the game, they will be erased. Also by beating the Challenge mode with certain characters, you can access certain cheats like being able to access very hidden characters like Turok Dinosaur Hunter, Cactus Jack, and a super strong Stone Cold Steve Austin called the Rattlesnake. Or you can have a cheat where all of the characters have big heads, little heads, big feet, or big hands. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate this game a 9.7. This game is a definite MUST GET!!! Make sure you check out the WWF Warzone cheats later in this article.
Kobe Bryant’s NBA Courtside: This game is one of the most advanced basketball games for the N64, completely blowing away NBA Hang Time for the N64. This game has superior graphics among most sports games. NBA Courtside is going to be the first of a basketball series hosted by Kobe Bryant. NBA Courtside has all the details that make a sports game great. On a scale of 1 to 10, I rate this game a 8.0. This is truly one of the best sports games to come along in a long time.
CODES OF THE ISSUE!!!
This issue, we have a number of codes, all for WWF Warzone. There are a few different categories that these codes are in, and all are pretty useful. IMPORTANT!!! To Save and use any of these codes, you must have a Memory Card in the back of your controller! ALSO IMPORTANT! The upcoming codes are only for WWF Warzone64 only for N64! Movies
By Kevin Dacey and Ryan McNeill
This summer, some very good and interesting movies came out. Here are the top five summer movies and their plots.
1. Saving Private Ryan Rated R * * * *: A great movie! The plot was great and enough action and gore to last the whole year. It was about a general and seven other troops sent out to find one other while they struggle to answer the question: why risk eight lives for one?
2. There's Something About Mary Rated R * * *: Extremely hilarious! It is about a broken relationship seventeen years later as Ben Stiller hires Matt Dillon to find Cameron Diaz's Mary. Chaos ensues as Matt Dillon falls in love with her.
3. X-Files Rated PG-13 * * *: The hit TV show makes it to the big screen. This movie continues where the '97-'98 series left off. The X-Files are closed and agents Mulder and Scully are put on the terrorist unit of the FBI. But when a government building blows up and Mulder smells a conspiracy, the two agents are in race to save the world.
4. Armageddon Rated PG-13 * * *: Not as emotional as the spring hit Deep Impact, but maybe a little better. This movie starts right away with a meteor shower "littering" New York and other parts of the world. But, to NASA, this was the calm before the storm because an asteroid the size of Texas is heading on a collision course to Earth. The government then sends the world's best drilling team to drill a whole in the asteroid and place a nuclear bomb in the center of the asteroid and blow it up before it collides with Earth.
5. Halloween: H20 Rated R * *1/2: The slasher series Halloween continues with this movie where Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode fights her demonic brother Michael Myers. This time it happens in a private school that Strode is the principal of, only she changed her name to Kerry Tate, to elude Myers. Only that he finds her, and a life and death struggle with the insane serial killer.
Horror Films: What's the story?
Lately it seems that the horror films have to a plunge to the bottom of the movie food chains as the only good plots were stretched out into seven or eight sequels that just ruined the whole idea. Flicks like Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the Thirteenth, Halloween and the soon to be new Child's Play which already wore itself out in three films. What is amazing though is that the old movies, which had cheesy special effects, were the good ones! Like the classics Dracula, Frankenstein, An American Werewolf in London, and The Curse of the Mummy. They were good, even if they added on a few sequels. But now in the nineties, the horror films are beginning anew with the creation of Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Halloween H20, and others that aroused the attention that horror films are still desired. But the fame may not last, since Hollywood is still making too many sequels. Scream 2 has already came out, (Not that it wasn't good.) and rumor has it that a third is in the works. I Still Know What You Did Last Summer is coming out in November, although the original didn't really need a sequel, and Disturbing Behavior, which already came out, but didn't quite make it in the horror section according to the outside newspapers. So we shall see how they do. But other horrors are coming out, like the new movie Urban Legends, which the starts are Alicia Witt and Joshua Jackson that looks like it could make its way to the top of the charts. So as Hollywood produces more and more horror films, we should all hope that they slash their way to the top.
Urban Legend * * 1/2
A lot of horror movies are coming out these days. One of the most creative was Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and now Urban Legend, with the most creative plot that teen horror movies ever had. Scream asked you the questions," Do you like scary movies?" I Know What You Did Last Summer says honesty is the best policy. Now Urban Legend asks," Do you believe in legends?" Well you better, because at the Fictional Pendelton College they’re coming true. Rebecca Gayheart (Scream 2), Joshua Jackson (Mighty Ducks series, Dawson's Creek) Alicia Witt (Mr. Holland's Opus) Jared Leto, and others add their names to the list of teen horror stars.
The movie begins with a young girl driving her van on a deserted road. When the car almost runs out of gas, she pulls up to a mysterious gas station with a secret in her back seat. Back to Pendelton College where the naive students here word of a murder. The whole campus thinks of it as an excuse to throw a party (Think Stu and Billy in Scream) But when a student figures out that there is a serial killer who kills based on urban legends, the only question that is raised is," What or who is next?"
Put-downs
By Andrew Yaksic
So, it’s a new year, with a new class of people. As an 8th grader, I experience more put-downs in a day than I did when I was a fifth grader. We have the same class as before minus two, so why has the problem gotten worse? Sure, we can sometimes fool around when we put people down, but it really doesn’t feel too good. Personally, I encounter more than fifteen put-downs every day aimed at my weight. Look, I’m not the thinnest kid in the class, but whose problem is it, really? I know for a fact that the kids that put me down and one other anonymous person down aren’t the brightest kids in the world. We all remember the yellow pins that said "I don’t put up with put-downs" and we were all told that we didn’t have to wear them; but people wore them anyway. Now, the same people that wore those pins are the people that are hurting other people both physically and mentally. Sure, the occasional charley horse or "mount" (you know what I’m talking about) aren’t technically "put-downs," but I’ve been "mounted" and been brought down to the floor. The person that did it didn’t even offer to help me get up or pick up the things I was carrying that went flying all over the floor. Being called "retarded" doesn’t feel too good either. Just because you screw up doesn’t justify being called retarded. These aren’t the only kind of insults we exchange. We also make some comments that don’t make any sense at all that were addressed last year at an assembly. So, you should think twice about the person you’re insulting before you just throw a put-down at him, because even if you think you could shrug off the same comment if somebody says it to you, just remember that not everybody is like you. (By the way, if you would be interested in wearing a yellow pin, it is possible that we may have some. Just let me know. Also, getting a little bit off the subject, watch where you’re throwing things at recess, and if you want to know why, ask Ms. Miller what happened to her.)
And now, two full pages of comics by Drew Vanderburg and Mike DeFillippi!
